PMP Exam Registration Guide

1. PMP Eligibility Criteria

Before signing up for the PMP Certification Exam, you must meet eligibility requirements based on educational levels, experience levels, or both before you apply. You will need to provide details of your education and/or experience. So it is encouraged that you gather and prepare this information prior to starting your application.

2. Register/Login with PMI

To begin registration for the PMP Certification Exam, you must either sign in or create a free account with PMI.org.

Now that you have an account with PMI.org, in the navigation bar (purple), click on "Certifications", then at the bottom of the column, click "Apply Now".

Once you are on the Certification Program page, click on "Apply for PMP Credential".

Now you should see a screen similar to the image below.

3. Fill Out PMP/PMI Application

Now you are ready to apply. Use the information that you gathered to help you fill out the information needed for the PMP Certification Exam.

  • Education Information
  • Domain Education
  • Domain Experience

Your application will remain active for 90 days. Applications over 90 days old will expire automatically.

Pro-Tip: To complete the application quickly, gather all of the information and documentation you need before opening it. Otherwise, it will likely take you multiple sessions to complete.

4. Application Review

Once you have submitted your application, PMI will verify that you meet the eligibility criteria and that your experience and/or education is valid and consistent with the guidelines that are stated in the certification handbook.

You can expect the review period to take about 5-10 days. Your application will automatically be moved to the next step after the review has been completed.

If PMI has any questions and/or concerns with your application, they will email you further instructions and directions.

5. Payment

After PMI notifies you that your application has been approved, you will need to provide payment so you can move to the final stage of the process. The fastest and easiest way to pay is through their online certification system.

Once payment is received, PMI will email you an eligibility number that you must use to schedule your exam appointment. You are eligible for up to one year, and you may take the exam up to three times during that year.

6. Schedule PMP Certification Exam Appointment

Once you are eligible, PMI will email you exam scheduling instructions with your eligibility code. Use the eligibility to code to schedule your PMP Certification Exam appointment. You can schedule your exam online or by phone. Details can be found in the PMP certification handbook and within the examination scheduling instructions. At this point, you are signed up and scheduled to take the PMP Certification Exam.
